NEW PLANT AT THE ISLAND OF SIKINOS
On 08/05/2011, one more sea water desalination plant was set in operation, with production capacity 200 m3/day at Sikinos island. Apart from sea water, the plant can treat brackish water from 2 wells of conductivity 5.000 – 10.000 μS/cm, providing thus drinking water with far less energy consumption.
The desalination plant is housed in one 40” container with ventilation, thermal insulation, air conditioner and special sound insulation (for noise up to 55 db at a distance of 1m) that makes it the least noisy of its size. The container contains the pre-treatment (turbidity filters, cartridge filters), the reverse osmosis unit, the post-treatment (rehardening filter) and all the necessary dosing systems. Furthermore, two raw water tanks of 10 m3 each, have been installed (sea and/or brackish), as well as a drain tank of 1,5 m3.
The operation is based on the reverse osmosis method using semi-permeable membranes, that produces haigh quality water and rejects the concentrated with salts water. The permeate water goes through the rehardening filter in order to get the necessary calcium hardness and become healthier, tastier and less corossive. The result in any case, is product water impeccable from chemical and microbiological point of view.
This new desalination plant in Sikinos, covers over and above the present and future needs of the island in water and creates opportunities for further development, disengaging the island from the costly and impractical water supply by ships.
